Object of the Day: An Antique Sapphire and Diamond Stickpin

Sapphire and diamond jewelry is very much in vogue right now as Prince William of Wales has recently presented his soon-to-be bride, Catherine Middleton, with the lovely sapphire and diamond ring which once belonged to his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. It’s not the first time that a special diamond and sapphire jewel has been a part of a Royal wedding. Prince Albert gifted a large sapphire and diamond pin to his bride-to-be, Queen Victoria, on the eve of their wedding.

But, the combination of sapphires and diamonds has enjoyed a long marriage of its own. The two stones are often combined and jewelers and their wearers appreciate the contrast of the fiery flicker of diamonds against the midnight glow of sapphires.

This antique Victorian stickpin set in white gold shows an attractive combination of these two precious gems that dates back over one hundred years. A particularly heavy piece, the pin sports five diamonds (one large and four smaller) in the center and edges of a volute-framed shield. Beneath the central diamond, a trillion-cut sapphire offers a subtle, deep blue glimmer.

This stickpin was given to me last weekend for Easter and was a welcome addition to my collection.

I think it is *always* in vogue. They're so unlike any other (even aquamarine) color.
