Gifts of Grandeur: The Lady Cory Daisy Brooch, 1962

Brooch, 1962

The celebrated Lady Cory whose jewel collection we've been examining for the last couple of years was often referred to in London Society as Belgrvia's "That Girl." Lady Cory took the title quite seriously, and, soon, she began to affect then style and manner of Marlo Thomas.

A famous event in Lady Cory's life occurred circa 1965 when she arrived at Claridge's dressed in full "That Girl" regalia-- short, acid green, pleated dress hemmed in hot pink; a fluorescent, yellow pleather clutch; a stiffly-sprayed black wig curled at the bottom; and this brooch of metal which she had stolen from a barrow near Harrods in 1962.  As the story goes, Lady Cory referred to all males at the celebrated hotel as "Donald" before declaring that she required immediate rhinoplasty.  She caused an estimated £12,000 worth of damage to the hotel's chandeliers while attempting to fly a kite emblazoned with her own portrait  in the corridors.  Legal action is still pending.

APRIL FOOLS!

This fashionable daisy brooch was a favorite of my mother's around 1962.  Though my mother has been to Claridge's, she didn't wear this brooch there nor did she fly a kite inside.
