Object of the Day: Homecoming of the Duke and Duchess of York

Another postcard from my collection of Royal ephemera, this one is also by J. Beagles and Co., Ltd. and asserts that it is a “guaranteed real photograph.”

Dating to about 1928, this card is labeled:

Homecoming of T.R.H. The Duke and Duchess of York

Around this time, the Duke of York (later King George VI) and the Duchess of York (later Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother) had embarked upon a lengthy state visit in the place of his father King George V and Mother, Queen Mary. At this time, King George V was having one of his bouts of ill health and was unable to make the trip, so he sent his second son. Of course, “Bertie,” had no idea that he would one day be king instead of his unpleasant brother, David, so he didn’t mind helping out his Royal mother and father.

The card lists the sitters:

T.M. King George & Queen Mary, Duke and Duchess of York

With Princess Elizabeth and Earl and Countess of Strathmore Look at the little princess. She was making the same face just this week during the celebration of her Diamond Jubilee as Queen Elizabeth II. She’s still a doll!
